Scalzi’s signature style of clever humor works well in creating an engaging story. Redshirts is a highly enjoyable novel for anyone who ever watched and loved Star Trek. Newly appointed Ensign Andrew Dahl is baffled by a number of oddities aboard the famous ship: Why do so many senior officers go on so many away missions that have nothing to do with their jobs? Why do so many ensigns get killed off in such strange ways? How exactly does the crew keep coming up with the strange brand of science that solves seemingly impossible problems – but only at last possible minute before disaster strikes? And why is it that no one else seems to notice, or at least be willing to acknowledge, just how weird it all is? Dahl and a small group of friends set out to find answers for the questions no one seems to want to talk about, and end up finding out more than they had ever expected. The starship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union, is famous for its bold exploration of the universe – and for its surprisingly high mortality rate for low-ranking crew members on away missions.

Even if they learn and change their sins set events into relentless motion. This series has the same sense of inevitability: these characters with these flaws make only one ending possible. Their talent was not inventing novel stories but retelling familiar ones in their unique voices. I am reminded of Euripides and authors down to Eugene O'Neil and on. Instead of being a collection of bones Maguire carries as the burden, they are the skeleton the story is able to flesh out and again animate. We do not know them from The Wizard of Oz but from Wicked. The locations, history, culture, milieu and relationships in the story are no longer Baum's but Maguire owns them. Not being tied by our familiarity to Baum's book or the 1939 movie musical, the plot is fully Maguire's and hung together as a fabric instead of just threads having to pass through specific events. The characters remain idiosyncratic but their growth and motivations were more satisfying to me. Second in Maguire's histories of the Thropps, the family of the Wicked Witch of the West, I found this in almost every way superior to the first, Wicked. With monstrous sasquatches freely attacking the denizens of the zoo and the evil Shadowist at large, the fate of the world is at stake. The Asexual and Aromantic Database contains hundreds of entries for characters in prose fiction, and while that is a great tool to discover new books and have an overview of what’s out there, it also doesn’t distinguish between awesome stories and terrible ones. Multiple romantic storylines among the multiethnic cast develop organically and don’t pull the focus away from keeping up with the plots. Following the call of her changed abilities, she’s drawn to an area with poisoned waters and a mysterious factory holding dark secrets. Meanwhile, in the months since the end of Crooked Kingdom (2016), grieving Nina has returned to Fjerda on a mission to rescue and recruit Grisha. With traveling becoming too risky given his secrets, Nikolai and his inner circle hatch a display of strength that will bring the other powers to him for diplomacy, using the cover of his seeking a queen. Worse, for the past 6 months Nikolai has been struggling with an enemy inside himself: The monstrous curse thought ended by the death of the Darkling re-emerges when he sleeps, posing a danger to his people, crown, and soul. Though Ravka’s civil war ended three years ago, Ravka still faces threats both domestic-pretenders to the throne, policies that are popular with commoners but anger nobility-and external-old enemies like Fjerda, debts owed to Kerch. In this Grishaverse novel, King Nikolai struggles to keep his kingdom afloat in a destabilized, rapidly changing world. Spanning nearly two centuries, this “whip-smart” ( Publishers Weekly, starred review) cultural history takes us from the performance halls of 19th-century London to the aerobics studios of the 1980s, the music video set of Sir Mix-a-Lot’s “Baby Got Back” and the mountains of Arizona, where every year humans and horses race in a feat of gluteal endurance. But why? In Butts: A Backstory, reporter, essayist, and RadioLab contributing editor Heather Radke is determined to find out. A woman’s butt, in particular, is forever being assessed, criticized, and objectified, from anxious self-examinations trying on jeans in department store dressing rooms to enduring crass remarks while walking down a street or high school hallways.
